Description
Joseph Brown, a distinguished member of the Sunshine Awards stage production team, serves as the Musical Director, infusing his expertise and passion into the heart of the prestigious event. Inspired by Gilman T. Figaro, Sr.’s dream to positively contribute to society by honoring Caribbean art innovators, Joseph plays a pivotal role in bringing the vision to life. Since the program’s inception in 1989, Joseph has been an essential part of the team, contributing to the success of the Sunshine Awards that began as “Calypso and Steelband Music Awards Inc.” The inaugural event, held on June 24, 1989, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, marked a historic night where Joseph, as the Musical Director, played a key role in the execution of the theme, “A Reflection on the History of Calypso and Steelband Music,” with Gil’s script guiding the evening.
On this memorable night, Joseph orchestrated the musical elements that accompanied the presentation of twenty awards, selected by independent judges, while well-known Caribbean artists delivered stellar performances. The establishment of the “Calypso and Steelband Music Hall of Fame,” co-founded by Dr. Hollis “Chalkdust” Liverpool, further underscored the event’s significance. Joseph’s role as the Musical Director became even more critical as the Sunshine Awards Program expanded globally, recognizing unsung heroes from South America, Central America, and Africa. His musical direction contributed to the program’s endorsement by the National Academy for the Recording Arts and Sciences in 1994 and the United Nations in 1998.
Joseph Brown’s dedication reflects the Sunshine Awards Program’s commitment to cultural diversity and the values of discipline and ethics fostered through the performing arts. His role as the Musical Director signifies music’s profound impact on the cultural landscape and societal values.
