Mention the name Sir Selvyn Walter, and immediately images and memories of the well-known politician, writer, and journalist stage a jamboree in our minds. However, we must make space for also celebrating and remembering him for his contribution to the Arts, as a founding member of the great Halcyon Steel Orchestra of the Gray’s Green Community in St. John’s Rural West Constituency. This year Halcyon Steel Orchestra, widely regarded as one of the most successful steelband in Antigua/Barbuda, celebrated its 50th Anniversary. In 1996, to mark the band’s twenty-fifth anniversary celebration, Sir Walter, praised and thanked all who helped through the years to facilitate Halcyon Steel Orchestra’s success. Halcyon Steel Orchestra won the Antiguan Panorama championship thirteen times and is the only band with the distinction of winning four consecutive championships (1992-1995). Sir Paul Richards (Calypsonian King Obstinate) paid tribute to Halcyon Steel Orchestra in a calypso entitled “Fifty Years of Pan.” Sir Selvyn Walter was recognized nationally for his tremendous contribution to the Steelband movement in Antigua and Barbuda. He departed our world in September 2020.
