Dr. Oluyinka O. Olutoye

Dr. Oluyinka O. Olutoye earned his medical degree from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, then received his Ph.D. in anatomy from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond in 1996. He completed his residency in general surgery at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals, Virginia Commonwealth University, and his fellowships in pediatric and fetal surgery at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA. He is often described as a medical trailblazer from Nigeria practicing in the United States. In 2016, at Texas Children’s Hospital, Dr. Olutoye co-led a team of 21 doctors to remove a large tumor from the tailbone of a developing fetus. To safely remove the tumor, the surgical team partially removed the 23-week-old fetus from the uterus for 20 minutes, and then returned the baby to the mother’s womb for the remainder of the gestation period, after which the baby was born healthily. Dr. Olutoye is currently the Surgeon-In-Chief at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, leading one of the largest children’s hospital surgery departments in the world.
