Description

Janice Forde, an esteemed Sunshine Awards stage production team member, has been an integral part of the program since its inception in 1989. Inspired by Gilman T. Figaro, Sr.’s visionary dream to make a positive and enduring contribution to society, Janice joined the effort to pay tribute to the great innovators and contributors to various Caribbean art forms through the “Calypso and Steelband Music Awards Inc.” On the historic night of June 24, 1989, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Janice played a crucial role in the success of the First SUNSHINE Awards® Program, themed “A Reflection on the History of Calypso and Steelband Music.” Twenty awards were presented, selected by independent judges, and well-known Caribbean artists graced the stage with stellar performances. The evening also marked the formal establishment of the “Calypso and Steelband Music Hall of Fame.” As the SUNSHINE Awards Program expanded globally, recognizing unsung heroes from South America, Central America, and Africa, Janice’s contributions in the stage production team became increasingly vital. Her commitment aligns with the program’s endorsements by the National Academy for the Recording Arts and Sciences in 1994 and the United Nations in 1998. Janice Forde’s involvement reflects the SUNSHINE Awards Program’s dedication to embracing cultural diversity, emphasizing “unity in diversity.” The program recognizes the profound impact of cultural diversity on societal values, discipline, and ethics through the performing arts.
